Guest Lecture on Feminist Jurisprudence and contemporary developments in the area of women and Law
School of Law organized a guest lecture on 20th
of September 2019 on Feminist Jurisprudence and contemporary
developments in the area of women and Law. Ms. Shiva Priyamvada from
the University of Delhi was the guest speaker for the event. She started
with the concept of the basic feminist idea that there is no difference
between men and women when it comes to their fundamental worth. The
nature and value of a person is independent of their gender. The
essential idea of feminism is the equality of woman with man. Feminism
rests mainly on the belief that women are unjustly treated in many
aspects of life. Our
contemporary society is patriarchal, in the sense that it has been
shaped by, and continues to be dominated by, white men. As a result of
this patriarchal structure, women do not have as much power as men and
are not treated in the same way as men, do not enjoy the same degree of
control over their lives as men, and in general are referred to a
subordinate status. She elaborated by basing her arguments on some
landmark judgements. The end of this informative lecture was marked by
giving a gift to Ms. Shiva Priyamvada by Dr. Ramesh Kumar, the head of
the department, as a token of gratitude. This session was quite
fruitful for the budding lawyers and helped them a lot by giving them
great insights about feminist jurisprudence.
